How to Gear up for a New Theatre Teaching Position while on Summer Break

Are you getting ready to start your very first job as a Theatre Teacher? Are you transferring to a new school as a Theatre Teacher? If so, I have made a "Summer Survival Tips" video to help you prepare for your upcoming school year while you're still on summer break.

Background: I am going into my 5th year of teaching theatre this fall. Right out of college, I got a job teaching high school (the same place I did my student teaching) and taught there for 2 years. I then moved to a bigger city to teach theatre to K-5 students in the public school setting. How cool is that to see an elementary school offer theatre to young, creative minds?! I am now beginning a new journey back to teaching high school, but this time at a HUGE school with over 1700 students. To me, that is huge.

So I've been preparing for a smooth transition into my new position and I thought I'd share my tips with you on my YouTube channel! Click here to watch the video and feel free to leave a comment as to what you'd like to see next, or any questions you may have!

Enjoy & break a leg on your new job!

How I Clean & Sanitize My Makeup and Brushes

If you would like to learn how I clean/sanitize my makeup and brushes in between clients, check out my YouTube video by clicking here. There, you will see me use the Beauty So Clean products I ordered online, my first impression of the products, then a tutorial on how to use them.

I like the Beauty So Clean products because they are paraben free! Parabens are a preservative that is put into a lot of beauty products and has been linked to causing breast cancer. Traces of parabens have been found in breast cancer tissue, so I stay away from them, and I will NOT knowingly ever put harmful ingredients onto my clients skin.

If you would like to order these products for yourself for your freelance business or just to have at home to keep your makeup and brushes clean (in between deep cleaning) you can check them out at their website. Or you can watch their company YouTube video here

Please comment below if you have any questions! I think this would be a perfect addition to your bathroom or makeup kit. Enjoy!

Bridal & Special Event Hair and Makeup Services

Hello, all!

UPDATE: Check out my new and improved website: Kala's Stage This is my new sire for my clients. All updated photos of my work and other information will be available on my new site (not here). I will still continue to use this site (blogger) for my blogging purposes, however. Enjoy!

I have been doing hair and makeup since college when I took a Stage Makeup class, was a hair/makeup designer for an adjudicated production (I won an award for my work on William Shakespeare's The Tempest) and was a Mary Kay consultant for several years. I love Halloween and Theatrical styles of makeup and hair, so keep me in mind for those type of services as well as special events! As a theatre teacher, I actually teach my students how to do special effects makeup. This is super fun for me!

Hair and makeup has always been a hobby of mine. Though I teach/direct theatre by day, I'd love to help make people feel beautiful for their special events on the side! If you are interested in my services, let's communicate! You can contact me at kalasstage@gmail.com or via phone (859) 545-0044.

I'm located in the Lexington, Kentucky area. I am very affordable since I am not technically a "certified" makeup artist nor have been to cosmetology school, but I have been practicing my skills and the art form for many years now. I use all paraben free products and clean and sanitize my makeup and brushes with "Beauty So Clean" products (see my latest blog post about how I do this).

Take a look at my services, prices and contract if you are interested in booking with me:

Harley Quinn Suicide Squad makeup

Hey, everyone! I am kind of late on posting this but better late than never! My husband and I had been anxiously awaiting the premiere of Suicide Squad! Since I am really into makeup and getting into character, I thought it would be fun to transform myself into Harley Quinn for the opening night! I filmed myself getting ready and you can watch it here on my YouTube channel: Harley Quinn makeup tutorial

Here are a list of the products I used:

  • Lorac POREfection mattifying face primer
  • Bella Pierre Cosmetics green color corrector
  • Bella Pierra Cosmetics pink color corrector
  • Mehron Clown white cream makeup
  • It Cosmetics bye bye pores loose setting powder
  • It Cosmetics brow power universal brow pencil
  • Loreal brow plumper gel in light/medium
  • NYX jumbo eye pencil in "milk"
  • Urban Decay Vice LTD palette
  • Mary Kay weekender eye pencil
  • Smashbox eye & face palette
  • Urban Decay ammo palette
  • Urban Decay 24/7 black eyeliner
  • Loreal felt tip liquid eyeliner
  • Younique 3-D fiberlash mascara
  • Smashbox X-rated mascara
  • NYX HD blush in "taupe"
  • NYX red lip liner
  • Clinique matte lipstick in "crimson"
  • Maybelline MasterFix setting spray
  • TM hair chalk from amazon link here
  • spray bottle of water
  • curling wand
  • hair dryer
  • Bed Head After Party smoothing cream
  • elastic hair ties
Here is a review on the process and what to do differently if you want to recreate this look

Normally, I have very oily skin and in the past when I would use Ben Bye clown white, it was very creamy and my oil would cause it to melt a little. So this time, I took that precaution by adding a mattifying face primer before adding the Mehron clown white. I actually wish I hadn't done that. Mehron has a more matte type of finish so that combined with the primer made my skin feel extra dry and texture became very visible. When I used it again, I will use a more moisturizing primer. The makeup also made my fine lines more apparent too, which made me feel old. This will be better next time when I use more moisturizing primer on my face. They fine lines were blurred a bit once I put on the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores loose powder. This powder is great at blurring imperfections but can be a bit drying, so if you have dry skin, I would recommend spraying some rose water on your face after applying the powder.
When applying the hair chalk and using two different colors, I recommend using two sets of gloves as not to contaminate the two different colors on the hair. You will see me do this on my video, however, I should've left the gloves on a bit longer when drying and fixing my hair because the chalk got on my hands. It was easily washed off with soap and water though. The chalk made my hair very dry, not sure how to avoid this next time, but using the Bed Head smoothing cream after styling my hair did help with frizz and to add a bit of moisture back into my hair. Amazon says that this hair chalk should wash out after one washing; this wasn't the case for me. It took me two separate washes for it to come out completely. Disclaimer: my hair holds color extremely well, like more so than anyone else I know, so this may not happen to you. I also didn't mind having a bit of fun color left in my hair for a bit, because I am that type of artsy person. I used to have a dyed pink strip in my hair for over a year in college and I loved every second of it!

Eyeshadows I used some high end eye shadow palettes to create this look. Don't let that intimidate you from recreating this yourself. You can find some perfectly pigmented drug store eye shadows that will get the job done just fine. All you really need is a hot pink, maybe two different shades of blue and a black (if you want to make it a bit smokey like I did). Using a white eye crayon or an eye crayon that matches closely to your eye shadow colors will not only increase the longevity of your eye shadow, but will make it "pop" or look more pigmented.

Costume For my outfit, I used an old pair of soffe shorts, fish net hose, a t-shirt from amazon Harley Quinn shirt, some knee-high bright socks, sneakers and charcoal stud earrings.

Here are some pictures from my little photo shoot

Hey, everyone! Welcome to my blog! Here, you will find my thoughts on different theatre education strategies, beauty product reviews, makeup techniques and links to my YouTube channel. I have been obsessed with all aspects of theatre since childhood so much, that I decided to make a career out of it. Do what you love, right? I have been lucky enough to teach and direct both high school and elementary theatre in public schools. I am currently teaching theatre at the elementary level while playing with makeup and hair on the side. Thanks for stopping by!
